JiuJitsu GI
Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport focused on ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground, controlling them, achieving a dominant position, and using various techniques to force submission through joint locks or chokeholds.
Developed around 1920 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio Gracie, Jiu-Jitsu has its roots in traditional Kodokan judo. Carlos Gracie was introduced to judo by Japanese judoka Mitsuyo Maeda in 1917, which led to the creation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu—a distinct self-defense system.
Jiu-Jitsu evolved into a prominent combat sport through the innovations and adaptations of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and judo, becoming integral to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Governing bodies like the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) establish global rules and standards for competitions.
The essence of Jiu-Jitsu lies in the principle that a smaller, weaker individual can effectively defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent by leveraging technique, weight distribution, and ground control. This martial art is valuable for both sport grappling and self-defense.
Training in Jiu-Jitsu includes sparring, known as “rolling” in the Jiu-Jitsu community, and live drilling, which are crucial for skill development. Additionally, Jiu-Jitsu promotes physical fitness, character building, and a disciplined way of life.
